AC/DC comes home….to Australia

Posted by: Kathy on: February 12, 2010

How does a skinny middle aged man in an ill-fitting schoolboy’s suit have the power to make 60,000 people stand on their feet and chant his name?

He needs to be Angus Young.

As he has been for more than 30 years, Young was the heartbeat of AC/DC’s first concert in Australia since 2001 last night at Melbourne’s Docklands Stadium.

AC/DC again proved they love a big stadium show and pulled out their full range of tricks; their massive stage and light show needs 70 semi-trailers to cart them around the country.

From the fully pyrotechnic opening with the new Rock ‘N’ Roll Train to the encore with the classic Highway To Hell, seats were superfluous.

The bigger the better for Young who, at 54, has the energy of the schoolboy whose suit he stole.

As mighty as Malcolm Young, Phil Rudd and Cliff Williams are in the background, this show is all about Young, magnificently supported by Brian Johnson and his 63-year-old rasping vocals.

Young continually threw himself and his guitar around the stage and up and down a 50-metre catwalk with relentless showmanship. He didn’t stop throughout the two-hour show.

When he was elevated above the catwalk on a hydraulic platform, topless and soaked in sweat for a 20-minute guitar solo, the crowd was in the palm of his hand.

When he had earlier peeled off the first notes of the unmistakable opening to Thunderstruck, the chants went up: “Angus! Angus! Angus!”.

Back In Black was the third song. The crowd then feasted on Dirty Deeds, Thunderstruck, Hell’s Bells, Shoot To Thrill, High Voltage, TNT and more.

I ADMIT THE MUSIC IS A BIT HARSH TO SOME PEOPLE…BUT I LOVE IT!
